In 2022–23, Australia generated approximately 495 kilotonnes (kt) of end-of-life tyres, equating to 19 kg per capita, according to the National Waste Report 2024. This marks an increase from 412 kt in 2016–17.
The resource recovery rate stood at an estimated 56%, with 40% used for energy recovery and 16% recycled. Passenger vehicles accounted for 38% of the discarded tyres, while trucks contributed 32% and off-road applications, particularly in the mining sector, made up 30%.

Export regulations and illegal trade
A significant portion of the energy recovery occurred in export markets. To improve environmental and human health outcomes, the Australian Government introduced regulations in December 2021 to control the export of whole tyres.
Under these regulations, exports must now be in the form of shredded tyre-derived fuels meeting specific standards, whole tyres intended for reuse, large tyres suitable for retreading, or processed tyre materials for recycling. Despite these measures, some illegal exports of whole tyres persist, leading to prosecutions.
Onshore tyre recycling and sustainable applications
Domestically, tyre recycling efforts focus on repurposing materials for various applications. Onshore processing plays a crucial role in creating sustainable markets for recycled tyres. Recovered materials are used in road construction as additives, playground flooring, sports surfaces, and even retaining walls.
These initiatives support the circular economy by reducing landfill waste and finding innovative uses for discarded tyres.
The increase in end-of-life tyre generation highlights the growing need for effective recycling and recovery solutions. Stricter regulations and improved onshore processing capabilities are helping Australia move towards more sustainable waste management practices.
Expanding local markets for recycled tyres will be key to reducing reliance on exports and ensuring long-term environmental benefits.
